A metal tea tin with an inner seal is an excellent choice for storage. Its double closure helps protect tea from light, moisture, air and surrounding smells. Properly stored tea can remain enjoyable for a long time, although the fragrance gradually fades. If you reuse a tin for a different tea, wash it with unscented detergent and dry it thoroughly before refilling.
How should you store loose leaf tea and herbal infusions?
Careful storage helps protect the aroma and quality of delicate dried leaves and flowers. A few simple precautions make a big difference:
- Keep air and moisture out. Dried leaves can absorb humidity and gradually lose freshness when exposed to air. Use well-sealed pouches or airtight tins.
- Avoid direct light. Ultraviolet light can fade the colour and fragrance of tea leaves and dried herbs. Opaque tins are more protective than clear containers.
- Store away from heat. Excess heat and temperature changes can make the leaves brittle and diminish their delicate aromas. Choose a cool, dry cupboard.
- Protect from strong smells. Tea readily picks up surrounding odours. Store it away from coffee, spices and other strongly scented products in a properly closed tin.
