What is the difference between tea and herbal tea?

Tea is made from the leaves of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. Different processing methods produce green, black, white and oolong teas, all of which naturally contain caffeine. Herbal tea, or tisane, is brewed from other plants, flowers, fruits, seeds and bark. Most herbal blends are naturally caffeine-free, although ingredients such as yerba mate are exceptions.

What is the difference between a herbal tea and an infusion?

An infusion describes the process of steeping plant material in hot water to extract its flavour. This can include ordinary tea. A herbal tea (or tisane) is a drink prepared from plants other than the tea plant, such as camomile, peppermint or verbena. In other words, herbal teas are infusions, but not every infusion is a herbal tea.
