Our Earl Grey recipe
Timeless and indispensable, organic Earl Grey is the sort of tea you will always want to keep in your cupboard. To give this great classic our own character, we use loose leaf Assam black tea and add bergamot essential oil from Sicily. Extracted from the peel of the citrus fruit, the oil gives the tea its unmistakable lively, slightly bitter citrus fragrance.
After allowing the leaves to absorb the essential oil, we add cornflower petals. Their lovely blue colour provides a bright contrast to the dark tea leaves. For devoted green tea drinkers, we also make a green tea variation of Earl Grey: our Organic Citrus Green Tea.
How to prepare Earl Grey tea
Use 4 g of tea for 30 cl of water heated to 95°C. Steep for 3–5 minutes to develop the full aroma. For an extra indulgent cup, try a splash of milk and a teaspoon of honey.
Tasting suggestions
A favourite at British afternoon tea, Earl Grey pairs beautifully with cakes and biscuits, especially fruit-based bakes. Its fragrant citrus notes are equally enjoyable at breakfast, when the natural caffeine in black tea makes it a lively start to the day.
Storage
Keep the tea in an airtight container, away from air, moisture, light, heat and abrupt temperature changes. Our Earl Grey will retain its quality for at least two years after blending and packing in our workshop when stored properly. Please consult the best-before date on the pack.
About black tea
Black tea naturally contains plant polyphenols, caffeine and L-theanine. These compounds contribute to the characteristic flavour and stimulating character of the drink. The tea's effect on you will depend on the quantity brewed and your individual caffeine sensitivity.
About bergamot essential oil

Bergamot essential oil contains naturally occurring aromatic compounds, including linalool and limonene. Bergamot oil is also discussed in traditional aromatherapy literature, but the small food-grade quantity used in our tea is intended for flavour, not as a therapeutic dose.
The history of Earl Grey tea
📖 One of the world's best-known flavoured black teas, Earl Grey has a history surrounded by stories and legends. In a popular account, Charles Grey, the British statesman and later prime minister, brought the idea back from a diplomatic encounter involving China, and the tea merchants Jacksons of Piccadilly named the blend in his honour.
Another version credits the Twinings tea company with developing the blend for Lord Grey after he acquired a taste for bergamot-scented tea. There is no single universally accepted account of its invention. Today, Earl Grey remains a much-loved part of British tea culture, with a flavour story reaching far beyond Britain.
