Our organic mulled wine spice blend
This blend is ideal for making a warming, fragrant mulled wine on a winter's evening. In our workshop, we combine carefully selected organic bark, pods and seeds to evoke snowy evenings, Christmas baking, gingerbread and cosy moments.
Cinnamon brings together the warmth of ginger and cloves with fruity orange and lemon peel. Whole cardamom pods and star anise add aromatic, slightly liquorice-like notes. Inspired by the traditional spices of Alsace, this blend lets you enjoy mulled wine at home without waiting for the Christmas market.
How to make mulled wine
Our spice blend works beautifully with several styles of red wine, including Bordeaux, Burgundy and Pinot Noir. Choose a young, fruity wine with some body but not too many tannins. Gentle heating is important to preserve the flavours.
- Pour one 75 cl bottle of red wine into a large saucepan.
- Add 50 g of sugar (or around two tablespoons) and slices of orange or lemon, if available.
- Add 10 g of the spice blend and stir. Adjust the sugar and spice quantities to taste.
- Warm gently for approximately 10 minutes to release the aromas. Do not let the mixture boil, as high heat can change the flavour.
- Strain the spices and fruit before serving. Enjoy your homemade mulled wine!
Variations and other ideas
- Other drinks: try the spice blend with white wine or cider instead of red wine.
- Alcohol-free: replace the wine with grape, orange or apple juice. It also works wonderfully with a tart hibiscus infusion.
- Make it your own: add a split vanilla pod, a handful of raisins or an unexpected touch of curry spice.
A little history
📖 Spiced wine dates back to the Roman period and was enjoyed throughout the Middle Ages, when people mixed wine with honey and aromatic ingredients such as cloves, cinnamon and rosemary. One celebrated historical drink was hippocras, a wine flavoured with spices.
Over the centuries, spiced wine developed into various regional drinks, from sangria in Spain to vin chaud in France. Hot mulled wine is particularly associated with Alsatian Christmas markets and festive celebrations across neighbouring European countries. Today, its warming aroma is part of the magic of winter.
