Organic hibiscus flowers for infusions and bissap
Hibiscus is known by many names around the world: bissap in Senegal, karkadé in Egypt and sorrel in parts of the Caribbean. Our organically grown, cut hibiscus calyces (Hibiscus sabdariffa) come from Egypt.
The vivid red calyces produce a beautiful ruby-coloured infusion with a pronounced, refreshing tartness reminiscent of red berries. They make a delicious caffeine-free drink, whether served piping hot or over ice.
How to make hibiscus tea or bissap
For a hot infusion, steep the flowers as indicated above. For a traditional chilled drink, infuse, strain and cool; add fresh mint, lemon or a little sugar if desired. Hibiscus also combines beautifully with ginger, orange peel and other fruit.
From plant to cup
Hibiscus thrives in warm climates, producing attractive flowers followed by colourful calyces that can be harvested and dried. Its use in drinks is part of long-standing African and Caribbean culinary traditions. The plant is sometimes associated with health benefits, but those claims should not be interpreted as medical advice.
