Organic Japanese Genmaicha
Genmaicha is a distinctive Japanese green tea combining Bancha tea leaves with roasted and puffed rice. The toasted grains give the infusion its instantly recognisable warm, nutty, cereal-like fragrance, while the green tea adds freshness and balance.
Bancha comes from the same tea plant as Sencha, but generally uses more mature leaves. Our organically grown Genmaicha from Japan is a comforting everyday tea that pairs particularly well with food.
How to brew and serve
Use water around 80°C and steep for about three minutes. The result is a rounded, toasty cup with a soft vegetal finish. Genmaicha is lovely with Japanese dishes, rice, grilled fish or savoury snacks, and can be enjoyed throughout the day according to your sensitivity to caffeine.
A little history
One colourful legend links the creation of Genmaicha to rice accidentally falling into a samurai's tea, but its precise origins are less certain. More prosaically, adding rice made tea go further and created an appealing roasted flavour. Today Genmaicha is enjoyed for its own unique character rather than as a substitute for plain green tea.
