Our organic Brazilian yerba mate
For generations, yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) has been enjoyed across South America. Our organic mate leaves come from Brazil and produce a lively infusion with earthy, vegetal and gently bitter notes. Mate naturally contains caffeine, contributing to its stimulating character.
Traditionally, the drink is prepared in a hollow gourd called a mate and sipped through a filtered metal straw known as a bombilla. Sharing mate is an important social custom in many South American communities.
How to prepare yerba mate
For an ordinary infusion, use the quantity and temperature shown above and strain after brewing. For the traditional method, fill a gourd partly with yerba, tilt the vessel to create space on one side, position the bombilla and pour in hot water at roughly 70–80°C. Refill with water as you drink, without stirring the straw.
Tradition and responsible enjoyment
Mate has a history of use among Indigenous communities, including the Guaraní, long before it became popular elsewhere. Its flavour is distinctive and its caffeine content can be considerable; moderate your intake, particularly later in the day. Avoid drinking any very hot beverage at scalding temperatures.
